It is indeed a rare opportunity to sit with Cristina, our Peruvian lineage holder, here in North America. We are deeply honored by her presence at La Mesa – our church’s secluded 55-acre retreat center with epic mountain views on the outskirts of Paonia, Colorado.
Cristina holds a potent ceremonial container with her ancestral Quechua songs, loving presence and calm mastery. Outside of ceremony, you will be held and nurtured by the Gracia Divina team which has many decades of experience and is known for our compassionate care and joyful camaraderie.
Please join us for this cherished annual gathering and experience the medicine of this community and of this sacred land through the lens of Cristina’s fluency.

La Mesa:
La Mesa is our church’s secluded 55-acre retreat center with epic mountain views and a swimming pond on the outskirts of Paonia, Colorado. It is home to elk and deer, mountain lion and bear, coyote and wild turkey, and so many more creatures who call this land home and who feast on the apples, pear, apricots, peaches and plums which grow throughout the property. It includes multiple buildings for lodging as well as a beautiful, large, open barn which houses our outdoor kitchen, dining and lounge area. La Mesa is a gem and is so much a part of the medicine that you will partake of while you are here.
Lodging:
Lovely shaded camping spaces are abundant, and free of charge. Indoor rooms, as well as a limited number of upgraded “glamping” tents, are also available to rent. These spaces are booked first-come-first-served. After you register, please email contact@graciadivinachurch.org to receive lodging options and pricing. We can also accommodate a limited number of camper vans and/or RVs. Please notify us if this is you. While we strongly encourage you to stay on property, there are many AirBnb options in Paonia. If you chose this option, please be discreet when reserving.
Our Lineage & Church Beginnings
The board, ministers, and sangha of Gracia Divina Church are your hosts for this opportunity to experience Cristina’s subtle and powerful healing. Her style and voice are extraordinary and are grounded in over 35 years of dedication and practice. She works with the humble confidence of a true master. She leads with the love and wisdom that comes from tilling the soil and tending the plants she is in love with. Cristina is a farmer who sings songs of transformation, songs of reverence, songs of gratitude, and within each and every ceremony, she builds a house of the heart – a sonqo wasi.
Cristina came to this practice as a 15 year old struggling with anxiety and depression. She quickly shifted from patient to student and apprenticed with Jorge Gonzales, Don Solon Tello and other esteemed elders in the Mestizo tradition in Tarrapoto, Peru. Roughly ten years later, while visiting friends in Telluride, CO, she met and sang for Marie Luna and Juanito. Those ceremonies were the first time Cristina facilitated without Jorge and were, in many ways, the beginning of her wildly impactful career. A few years later she set out on her own, moved her family from Tarrapoto to Jaen, and continued touring around the United States and Costa Rica with Marie. Thus began the distinctly matriarchal lineage of Maria Cristina Mendoza Vidal. A lineage which honors her indigenous roots and mestizo teachers, while incorporating the feminine traits of fearless communal space holding, tenderness and compassion. For over 30 years Cristina has been planting the seeds of her teachings and today, there are countless facilitators, all over the globe, who count Cristina as their primary teacher. We are certainly among them.
Gracia Divina Church was founded in 2016, nearly twenty years after that first sit with Cristina. We serve a dedicated nationwide sangha in both Colorado and Los Angeles, where GDC Minister Jason Bushman presides over services in his urban temple. We are honored to carry the torch of this humble, mestiza vegitalista.
“Mestizo” means “mixed cultural background” in Latin America, and is reflective of the rich and varied backgrounds of people with ancestors from the Americas and Europe. When Gracia Divina speaks of mestizo lineages we are making a clear distinction from indigenous lineages, which are composed of our sisters and brothers whose indigenous ancestors courageously survived genocide and persecution during colonial times, all the while protecting the many traditions of what are now known as the Americas. In later centuries, and long before there was financial gain to be had, many indigenous peoples heeded the call of the plants and graciously shared their ways with those of mixed ancestral backgrounds. These individuals and groups shared the path with their peers in urban centers and small towns throughout the Americas and beyond…to what has become a global healing phenomenon.
